EJC 2008: Germany squeezes past Austria to the final

Germany advances to the final for the fourth consecutive time after a narrow victory over Austria. The stakes were high, as the winner in group A:s last game would win the group, and a date with Sweden on Sunday. A long passing touchdown at the end of the first quarter broght the Germans 7-0 victory in a game dominated by the defenses.

The Austrian team was 1-1 before Thursday's game did have its chances. Even though the German running game moved the ball a little better, the Austrians managed to get into the red zones three times in the game. The results were one missed field goal and two fourth downs the team could not convert.

The last one came with little over four minutes left in the game, when an Austrian wide receiver dropped a pass on the goal line on fourth down. After that the bigger German team managed to run out the clock.

"This was basic football. Who made big plays and fewer mistakes won. Our defense did a great job. Austria did a good job in adjusting their defense, and we struggled with the run", Director of the German National Team Program, Peter Springwald said after the game. He also reminded that close games with their neighbours are nothing new.

"Our games with Austria have been decided in the last seconds for the past three years."

Silver medalist in the past three EJC:s, Germany goes on to face Sweden in the final. Austrians end up playing for the fifth place against Russia, as Germany's victory meant that Denmark finishes second in group B.
